As a teenager, I never found anti-drug messages particularly compelling (although I said no to drugs in high school). This seems to follow in that tradition; it’s very well made, entertaining, and it gets the message across with a little humor and a bit of ‘ick’, but I don’t have a big emotional reaction/a-ha moment by the end. I’d like to know if the concept was shared with the target audience and how they reacted…

First of all, I’d like to call anyone who thought that this ad was real a complete dumb-fuck. Like the kind of dumb that when expressed verbally hurts me on the inside because I can see where humanity is heading. Of course people dont put leeches on their skin to get high. The only thing you would get from a leech is a tiny bit of anticoagulant and possibly a disease. Second, I’d like to say that the ad was terrible and one of the most illogical anti-drug commercials I’ve ever seen. When you smoke weed there is an immediate benefit, the high. Simple cause and effect. However, when you put a leech on you there is no benefit. I just don’t see a connection besides the whole “they are both dumb things to do”. Which doesn’t even stand true in itself. I know that preece-baby says “pot is stupid and it will *f you life up!.”, but that is not anywhere near true. Its a fucking plant. It grows wild, no one has ever died from using marijuana in recorded medical history, and it is not physically addictive. I am 18 and I have been smoking weed since I was 12 years old. I am also considered a “chronic” smoker which means I smoke everyday. I played sports in high school, worked out, dated girls who didn’t smoke and everything was peachy. I also graduated ranked 18th in my class and never fell below 20th. Now, I’ve completed a semester in college with a 3.8125 and I made Dean’s Scholastic Honors. I am living, breathing proof that weed doesnt kill you or “*f you life up!.” I will be the first to admit that it can affect some people negativly. However, I’ve found through personal experience that the people that are affected negativly usually have an addictive personality and any substance can become addictive to them. Cigs, alcohol, even candy.

After watching this video clip completely, I’ve realized that it’s just trying to send a message. TV doesn’t play the whole thing, and therefore doesn’t have the correct impact. I looked up sloming, because I was shocked. Obviously I took the commercial the wrong way, like others have as well. Sloming whether it exists or not, is just like all the other things people try, in order to get the same effects as any narcotic. I’m not passing judgement, but trying to add some clarity to the picture in this discussion.
I think that the mesage is to “live above the influence,” not just marijuana, but any stimulant. Whether you think it’s cool or dumb or whatever, the ad is trying to get you to do something. That is what all ads do, and this one is particularly good, because we are all on this website discussing it. A big congrats to the creative director of “live above the influence.” You scared/shocked us enough to make an impact, and make us think, whether about the message you were trying to send, or other things. You achieved a goal in making us stop and think. Happy New Year everyone, and remember to live above the influence. : )

I am not going to tell any of you what you can do with your life but if you smoke weed then sooner or later you won’t have a life. You are really dumb if you think it’s good for you. My uncles both died from overdose in their late 20’s. I never even got to meet them. Smoking pot is affecting you, your family, and your friends. Your friend’s parents will eventually find out if you do it, and they won’t allow their son/daughter to hang out with you anymore which can lead to a loss of a good friend. Save yourself now and stop doing drugs, it’s so pathetic and it means you really are a lonely person with no life. Secondly, I myself don’t know if SLOMing is real, but i’m pretty sure its just a metaphor comparing drugs and SLOMing…they’re both idiotic things to do, go do something better with your life.

First I think that you can express your opinion without all of the bad language. I am a mother of 2 and first saw the commercial today and am still unsure if sloming is real or not. Its really hard for a kid today to see a friend or friends doing something and say no because of peer pressure. I think that so many parents now when their child reaches a certain age lets them take to much control of their own life. A child is still a child at the age of 12, 13, 14, 15. etc and you still need to make some decisions for them and still be able to give them responsibility of their own. We need to starting teaching our children morals and values when they are toddlers and don’t stop. It is an everyday responsibility. The hardest job a parent will ever had is being a good parent. Our children are a gift from God and we should treat them like that. Love them no matter what and teach them right from wrong everday of their life not just when the time arises. Hug your children everyday and tell them EVERYDAY that you love them. Show them how much GOD can do in their life not drugs. Children remember that your parents were once children also and most of the time they know what they are talking about. My son always tells yes Mom you were right I should have listened but sometimes they have to learn the hard way.

ive been threw anorexia and cutting and alllll that, and the only reason i went threw that and am still is because i was told about it in my health classes. that anorexia works, you loose weight, but you go to the hospital. cutting releaves pain, you cut to deep that sucks for you.
well ive been borderline hospital plenty of times and i regret it but i do it again because of the pressure put on me and last time i didnt die.

Sadly it is real now, because people saw it on t.v and decided to be stupid and try it. The commercial didn’t help much it just gave people new ideas how to hurt their self, I know it’s real because a lot of my friends are THAT stupid. Umm, being part of the “target audience,” I agree, anti-drug commercials in general don’t do anything for me. I think doing these ironic clever commercials is actually a bad idea…anyone dumb enough to have their decisions swayed by a commercial needs to have the “right” decision very bluntly stated to them. The other posts are a testament to the inability of people to pick up on this sublety. They might as well have 30 seconds of a R. Lee Ermey shouting “DON’T DO DRUGS” over and over.

OK… first off… On the pot.. It does have adverse effects… it is called very rightly the anti- motivational drug.. Wow, some people are so stupid. Leeches help with heart problems. They inject a chemicle that thins the blood. So when they suck it doesn’t clot and yeah. I saw the commercial for the whole slomming thing, and I had heard of it before, but my mom had told me it was just a metaphor stating what can you be convinved to do. Is this slomming thing real or not, cause the commercial really doesn’t make sense and is kind of stupid cause alot of dumb as*s are gonna try it to see if it works.

First of all SLOMing will not get you high, you might feel the same as if you went and donated blood. Leaches are used for medical purpose, they drain blood and let your veins repair themselves. They have no natural painkiller, nothing that will get you high. And according to my cousin kids in her school do this, because they think it is getting them high and it isn’t illegal. I think a big thanks goes out to the anti drug people for starting this.

I live in the Buffalo area, and twelve kids have gotten suspended at my middle school for SLOMing in school. Even if it doesn’t get you high, which I know it probably wouldn’t, everyone’s doing it because they think it will, there’s probably some sort of placebo effect too. It’s not just my town, I know lots of towns in the area have been having the same problem!
